VAT changes will lead to increased charges for Guyanese – Teixeira wants it repealed

Under changes to the Value Added Tax (VAT) Act, several items on the zero rated list have been removed, causing them to attract tax. These include health supplies and services, as well as educational and internet services.  This was done via an Order signed by Finance Minister, Winston Jordan, on December 19, 2017.

When the Order was brought to the House, Opposition Chief Whip, Gail Teixeira, attempted to have a motion heard, which called for the zero rated and exempt VAT lists to remain unchanged. She noted that the Government Chief Whip, Amna Ally, had not agreed to a sitting before Monday’s sitting (January 30th) and her motion would expire by then. Farmers continue to protest land rental, drainage fees increase

Farmers continued their protest action against the unconscionable increases in land rental and drainage fees being foisted on them by an uncaring APNU+AFC Government. Today’s large gathering outside the Onverwagt office of the Mahaica/Mahaicony/Abary-Agricultural Development Authority (MMA/ADA) was supported by party officials from Berbice and Executives of the Rice Producers Association.

Almost 2 years into APNU+AFC Gov’t & Guyana still “very corrupt” – 2016 Corruption Index

It is close to two years since the APNU+AFC administration assumed the reins of Government and Guyana is still listed in the “very corrupt” category in the latest Transparency International Corruption Index.

While in opposition the APNU and AFC had lashed out against acts they perceived to be corrupt. Whilst campaigning for office during the lead up to the 2015 elections the two promised to root out corruption. PPP calls for land rental, drainage fees increases to be rescinded

The People’s Progressive Party (PPP) is opposed to increases of rent and other fees by the Mahaica/Mahaicony/Abary-Agricultural Development Authority (MMA/ADA)and the party is calling for it to be rescinded.

Here’s a full statement issued on Thursday January 26th 2017:

The People’s Progressive Party (PPP) calls upon the Government to reverse the proposed increases in rents and drainage charges which are about to be imposed by the MMA/ADA on farmers occupying State Lands in Region 5. These fees would represent an almost 600 percent increase; farmers who currently pay $3,500 per acre will be required to pay $15,000 per acre. PPP wants parking meter project immediately scrapped- Supports citizens boycott

The People’s Progressive Party (PPP) is once again calling on the APNU+AFC Government to scrap the controversial parking meter project being implemented following an agreement between the Georgetown Mayor and City Council and Smart City Solutions.

The implementation of parking meters in the City of Georgetown is the latest blow inflicted upon the Nation by this Government. Against the backdrop of a declining economy, rising cost of living and the imposition by the Government of over two hundred (200) new tax measures and increases in public licenses fees in one calendar year, the parking meters will add even greater economic, financial and social hardships upon the backs of the citizens, especially those living, working or visiting the City of Georgetown. Teachers vent opposition to parking meters outside President, Prime Minister’s residence

A large contingent of Teachers staged a protest outside the Main Street residences of President David Granger and Prime Minister Moses Nagamootoo on Tuesday evening. The Teachers had the backing of their union, the Guyana Teachers Union (GTU), and a number of its leaders were out in solidarity. OP ED: APNU+AFC railroading justice, sidestepping DPP with another barefaced corrupt deal

Another day, another scandal has been revealed. The appointments of Special Prosecutors to go after PPP leaders can be viewed from different perspectives. Whichever perspective one chooses, the inescapable conclusion is that APNU+AFC has no interest in justice. They are on a witch hunting rampage. As if that is not scandalous enough, the $100M price tag and the procedure utilized to contract the special prosecutors are also adding to the heap of corrupt deals.
