Leader of the Opposition, Dr Bharrat Jagdeo, who is also the party’s General Secretary, led a delegation which undertook an outreach in several villages across Region Nine. The General Secretary and commenced meeting with residents on April 11th at Fair View and later held meetings in Potarinau, Rupunau, Quiko, Sand Creek, Merinau, Baitoon. Here are facts: Wales Sugar Estate is closed and hundreds of sugar workers are unemployed. Skeldon, Sugar Estate has had its first crop operations suspended, no planting has occurred and no harvesting has taken place. Skeldon is essentially closed. Enmore Sugar Packaging Plant has suspended its operation. LBI cane cultivation has ended and no planting has taken place at Enmore. Enmore/LBI has closed. The ethanol plant at Albion has not been used since 2015. PPP TO TABLE MOTION AGAINST VAT ON PRIVATE EDUCATION – HOPES FOR AFC SUPPORT

Below is a press statement by the People’s Progressive Party(PPP) in which it says it will bring a motion in the National Assembly against Government’s institution of 14% VAT on private education. The party also called out the AFC after the small coalition member said it will  canvass Cabinet to review for a review of the measure.

“The PPP recalls that the AFC voted along with the APNU in imposing VAT on private education during the 2017 Budget debate when the accompanying VAT measures were being imposed in the National Assembly. 800 Region One Amerindians reject Granger’s land titling Commission of Inquiry

Today, over 800 hundred Amerindians, from more than 13 villages unanimously passed a motion at the Mabaruma Sub-Region District Conference of the People’s Progressive Party, joining with the PPP, the National Toshaos Council (NTC), the Amerindian Peoples Association (APA), the Guyanese Organisation of Indigenous Peoples, the Amerindian Action Movement, the South Central Peoples Development Association, and the National Amerindian Development Foundation, condemning the establishment of a Commission of Inquiry by President David Granger, “to examine all issues and uncertainties surrounding the claims of Amerindian land titling, the individual, joint and communal ownership of lands acquired by freed Africans and any other matters relative to land titling would be for public welfare” Continue reading 800 Region One Amerindians reject Granger’s land titling Commission of Inquiry

PRESS RELEASE: GOV’T VIOLATING CONSTITUTIONAL RIGHTS OF OUR DOCTORS – PPP PROMISES LEGAL ACTION

The members of the medical profession in the public sector have expressed great concern at the high-handedness of the Government in attempting to peremptorily and unlawfully place all public sector doctors on the pensionable scheme. The PPP/C stands in solidarity with the doctors who, without any consultations and against their will, are being mandated to move from contract employment to the pensionable scheme. These doctors will lose their benefits; gratuity; and allowances. Their years of service will be shortened, thereby decreasing their benefits under the pensionable scheme. The doctors are also worried and outraged by the fact that their on-call allowances, Head of Department, Head of Section and overtime allowances will all now be taxed.
