The President continues to publicly insult and denigrate outstanding Guyanese of high professional rectitude and who have made sterling contributions in various endeavors to this country and its people.
In the latest edition of ‘The Public Interest’, the President callously remarked that even a ‘blind man’ would have seen that the second set of names submitted to him for the appointment of a Chairman of the Guyana Elections Commission (GECOM), did not meet the ‘criteria laid down.’ While the President gives lip service to constitutional compliance, he continues to insist that there be satisfaction of a set of criteria laid down by him – all of which are extra and ultra vires Article 161 (2) of the Constitution. The President also falsely asserted that his ‘criteria was never challenged’. This is farthest from the truth. Immediately after these ‘criteria’ were made known, it was pointed out that they were unconstitutional.
The President conveniently refuses to remind himself that he consented to his name being put on a similar list on two separate occasions, obviously, believing that he was qualified to be on those lists. However, by his own ‘criteria’, he would be swiftly disqualified. One is also forced to ask, what qualifies David Granger over and above any of the twelve (12) names thus far submitted? We condemn the President’s high level of condescension and public ridicule of a dozen accomplished citizens of this land.
We feel that these outrageous positions adopted by the President on this issue, which are totally out of sync with reality, is as a result of the President’s failure to engage in a full-fledged press conference for approximately 464 days and counting. Had the President been engaging the media on a more regular basis, rather than these sporadic staged discourses, he would have been much more au fait with this and other issues of national importance.
